Sir, - I agree with Declan O'Brien (July 17th) about the pedestrian problems in Dublin city centre, but disagree with his suggestion of subways. These are sinister places, dirty and dangerous; by putting pedestrians underground you make them feel like second-class citizens.

Why not go up instead of down? Put a light platform over O'Connell

Bridge, and connect it to neighbouring streets by walkways and lifts. It need not be an eyesore; properly designed it could even be an enhancement. Let there be cafe tables there, and seats for looking at the views in all directions, the whole effect elegant and gay (in the proper sense of that ill-used word). - Yours, etc., G.
