Sir, – I have been cycling in public for the past 74 years. In recent times I adhere closely to the rules of the road as recommended for motorists. It is said that cycling is dangerous. I disagree, but many cyclists ride dangerously. In a recent count at night in South Dublin, I found that about 50 per cent showed no lights and many lacked proper easily-identified clothing.
I do not agree that helmets have proved their value in proper and convincing surveys, but I do believe that the local authorities should adopt an active public campaign to influence cyclists about safe cycling just as in the past they have successfully brought about such good standards to motoring in our city. I would suggest, too, that a few interventions by the Garda might help to bring about safer and more responsible behaviour among us cyclists. – Yours, etc,
Sir, – Those cyclists who do not wish to wear helmets should be allowed freedom of choice – provided they carry organ donor cards. – Yours, etc,
