Making sense of food labels

Sir, – My wife recently bought some sea bass fillets at Tesco. On the front label was a square with the colours of our national flag and a statement saying “Produced in Ireland”. Also on the front was a note saying “Source Turkey”.

On the reverse of the label it stated “Farmed in Greece or Turkey. Packed in Ireland for Tesco Ireland Ltd”.

I don’t know about Tesco’s command of the English language but to state that something was produced in Ireland when it was only packed here seems to be stretching things too far. – Yours, etc,

EJ COOPER,
