Sir, – On a drive from Limerick to Galway yesterday I came across a fine example of a lack of joined-up thinking on a section of the N18 between Gort and Ardrahan.
Passing Kiltartan, with its national school and a level-crossing, the speed is 100km/h.
For some unknown and unclear reason, and with no warning, the speed then changes at Tannian’s Forge to 50km/h on a fine stretch of main road with no obvious difficulties on it.
Finally, entering the village of Labane, where Galway County Council appears to have spent a very large sum of money on “traffic-calming” measures, we can actually increase our speed to 60km/h. Beats me! – Yours, etc,
