Madam, - Ireland has nothing to fear from the enlargement of the European Union. In fact, the opposite is the case. Enlargement will mean that 100 million more people will become citizens of the Union. Already there are 400 Irish companies operating in Poland, Hungary and the Czech Republic alone.

Ireland is an exporting country and the member-states of the EU are our primary exporting base. We can take full advantage of EU enlargement by increasing exports into the markets of the new member-states. This will lead to the creation of more jobs in Ireland.

We can also continue to market Ireland for inward investment as the gateway to the marketplace of an enlarged European Union. - Yours, etc.,
