Sir, – I wish to respond to Winnie Healy's recent letter (February 10th) regarding Malin Head and local facilities. I would like to reassure Winnie (and your readers) that Fáilte Ireland shares her desire for improved local services at the site and that we are absolutely committed to promoting the region as a tourism destination.
Fáilte Ireland recently approved funding of €396,000 to Donegal County Council to develop visitor facilities at Malin Head, which will significantly enhance the visitor experience at the site.
Furthermore, Fáilte Ireland is working with the county council to develop a comprehensive and sustainable tourism plan for Malin Head that will incorporate the wider Inishowen area. This plan is focused on increasing the length of time visitors spend in the region because, while Malin Head is recognised as the main attraction that will entice visitors up to the most northerly point of our island, the site in itself is not sufficient to retain them for long.
Fáilte Ireland’s commitment to Donegal is absolute and we believe that our biggest project, the Wild Atlantic Way, will be a game-changer for tourism in the county – a view shared by very many tourism providers in the county. As Malin Head is one of the 15 main “Signature Discovery Points” along the route, its future development is integral to ensuring that Donegal benefits fully from the Wild Atlantic Way, and we are committed to making that happen. – Yours, etc,
ALEX CONNOLLY,
Head of Communications,
Fáilte Ireland, Dublin 1.
