Sir, - A report in The Irish Times of October 29th stated that a former attorney-general had pleaded guilty to driving with more than twice the legal limit of alcohol in his blood.
The judge imposed a mandatory two-year disqualification, along with a £100 fine. The last paragraph of the report says the judge stated he would restore the licence in 12 months if such an application came before him.
Could anyone explain to me how a mandatory two-year disqualification being reduced by 12 months can contribute to safety on Irish roads? - Yours, etc., Edward D. Rafferty,
