Sir, - I wish to register my grave disappointment, although not surprise, at RTE's millennium celebration programme. This was billed as a flagship of RTE's millennium celebrations but it excluded a significant sector of the population and therefore failed as a public service.
The day-long programme had no subtitles to cover the needs of deaf and hard-of-hearing viewers. In contrast, BBC and ITV subtitled their similar programmes - even when live.
The issue was there for a long time but RTE did nothing. By denying a vital service to the significant sector of the population in this unique era, RTE does not deserve to claim that it is a public service. I am so disappointed in RTE and I am sure that the sentiments are shared by thousands of people across the country. - Yours, etc., John Bosco Conama,
Ely Close, Oldcourt Road, Dublin 24.
