Madam, - Since the recent announcement of Dr Jim McDaid's intention to run for office once again, as a Fianna Fáil candidate in the next election, despite a firm assertion earlier this year that "politics no longer held any challenges for him", or some such clichéd claptrap, there has been comparatively little adverse media comment regarding his extraordinary about-turn.
By rights McDaid's drunk-driving performance on the Naas Road (never mind his grossly irresponsible and insensitive comments about suicide victims while in office) should have debarred him from running for office for life. However, in a country where the ideas of responsibility, accountability and the simple concepts of right and wrong are becoming increasingly fluid and superfluous, is anyone honestly surprised?
What's the betting that due to the cute hoorism and sheer rank stupidity at loose amongst broad swathes of the electorate in this country, this pompous political windbag probably stands a fair chance of re-election? - Yours, etc,
DAVID MARLBOROUGH, Kenilworth Park, Dublin 6W.
