Sir, – It is misleading to state that in 1951 Archbishop McQuaid opposed a scheme to provide for free maternity services (“Imposing character: Archbishop held post for 30 years”, Home News, December 8th) without adding that his opposition was confined to the absence of a means test and the consequent extension of free services to those who could afford to pay . He was not opposed to free services for those who could not afford to pay. – Yours, etc,
