Madam, - In your Weekend Review of May 20th Denis Staunton reported from Butte, Montana on a visit by the President, not for the first time, to the descendants of Irish immigrants in out-of-the-way places. Her support for people of Irish background was welcomed by, among many others, the present governor of the state. Her work in this field is commendable.
I was, however, a little disappointed that Mr Staunton's report did not mention that the first Governor of Montana was one of the most distinguished Irish emigrants to the US of the 19th century - none other than Thomas Francis Meagher of Clongowes, Van Diemen's Land, and the Sword.
- Yours, etc,
DAVID S. COOK, Loughbrickland, Co Down.
