Meeting Ireland’s energy needs

Sir, – Kate Ruddock (March 5th) rightly highlights recent retrograde steps taken by Electric Ireland to cease payments to microgenerators supplying them with electricity. This flies in the face of our stated goals of reducing our dependence on imported fossil fuels, reducing our greenhouse gas emissions and increasing our use of renewable energy. Why has the energy regulator sanctioned such a blatantly regressive policy?

Microgeneration of electricity needs to be encouraged in Ireland, as it is in Northern Ireland and the rest of Europe. National energy policy should mandate Electric Ireland and indeed all electricity suppliers to incentivise and facilitate the connection of all householders willing to invest in this technology. – Yours, etc,

GERARD WRIXON,

Kinsale, Co Cork.
