BILLY MANGAN,
Sir, - Áine Ryan's Irishwoman's Diary of June 29th was a delightful slice of the irreverent social life of Maynooth College in the 1970s. Images of clerics clamouring over the iron railings after a night's drinking, or sleeping with the enemy - which, incidentally, places them firmly back in the human race - and of Nell McCafferty challenging "whoever", ensured that the revolution was alive and well.
The sense of mischievous anarchy evoked is in stark contrast to the apparent conformity of today's student, who, far from rebelling against the "establishment" can't wait to join its ranks. It is to be hoped that Ms Ryan's article will prove inspirational to some budding rebel. Otherwise the revolution is indeed over. - Yours, etc.,
BILLY MANGAN, Thomond Road, Ballyfermot, Dublin 10.
