Sir, – I agree with Ken Buggy's comments (December 23rd) about how nice it is to hear Christmas carols sung on our busy streets rather than the oft-mumbled rendition of Jingle Bells.
One of my first memories as a child growing up in a country town was listening to Silent Night at our evening carol service. Over 50 years later the beauty of the words and music still brings me back to that moment of happiness and wonder. The world has changed immeasurably since then but thankfully the simple truth behind the words of this carol remains unaltered and undiluted as it continues to bring hope to a troubled world. – Yours, etc,
GEOFF SCARGILL,
