Madam, – I feel compelled to respond to Monica Barber’s entreaty (November 12th) that more men should put equality women “in their place” in response to the recent failed action by the Equality Authority against Portmarnock Golf Club.

Perhaps Ms Barber could explain how such women should be chastised? Perhaps her advice to men would be different were she the mother of four daughters rather than four sons. The United Nations defines violence against women as any act of gender-based violence that results in physical, sexual, or mental harm or suffering to women. Her throwaway comment endorses the pernicious culture of violence against women that is very real and often hidden. – Yours, etc,

Madam, – May I congratulate Monica Barber for her courage and common sense in “telling it as it is”. How refreshing to hear from someone who is not afraid of the ever-vocal strident voices of so-called feminists. – Yours, etc,
