Merits of the Premiership

Madam, - Andrew Fifield (August 21st) is still talking up the English Premiership and talking down Serie A

Madam, - Andrew Fifield (August 21st) is still talking up the English Premiership and talking down Serie A. He's fairly selective with his facts. Here are the ones he didn't mention. The wonderful Italian World Cup-winning squad all played in Serie A. Since 1989, there have been 12 Italian sides in the Champions League final, three from England in the same period. Last season, there were three Italian sides in the last eight, and one English.

It is not without reason that England have never made it to the final of the European Championships, and have only one World Cup final appearance in their name - and that was in London. Would it ever dawn on them that they are not good enough? - Yours, etc,
