Merkel’s refugee policy

Sir, – We should be grateful that approximately once in a generation a world leader comes along that is worthy of the name.

Angela Merkel and, of course, her supporters, deserve enormous credit for her and their determination to persevere in seeing the Germany provides succour for refugees from war-torn countries in the face of the outrages that have been perpetrated by religious fanatics, some of whom have used the refugee crisis to infiltrate Europe ("Merkel holds firm on refugee policy", July 29th).

I, for one, am proud to be associated with this effort, if only through Ireland’s membership of the European Union.
