Sir, - Full marks for your leader regarding Michelle Smith's wonderful achievements: In amplification of the sentiments expressed in your final paragraph, I would point out again that the National Lottery was set up for the purpose of building such facilities as a suitable 50 metre pool, the cost of which, it was felt, could not be met from normal Exchequer funding.
The funds, made available annually by the National Lottery to the Exchequer, would be sufficient to build ten 50 metre pools. We only need one in this country. Perhaps performances such as that of Michelle's will mean that our politicians will adopt a more enlightened attitude to the provision of adequate sports facilities. - Yours, etc.,
