Sir, – Niall Cremen (June 11th), like many in our State, seems to be confused as to the purpose of the Dáil technical group. The hint is in the name – it is a technical organisation, purposed to allow Independent TDs to better represent their constituencies by securing speaking rights, nothing more, nothing less. It is not a political party, nor does it take common political positions (a near impossibility in a group that contains both Shane Ross and Joe Higgins.)
So far those who have demanded condemnations and/or expulsions from the group are either 1. unaware of the technical group’s purpose and competencies, 2. government ministers and supporters looking for a convenient distraction. – Yours, etc,
Sir, – You report (Breaking News, June 9th) some TD called Seamus Healy as saying: “There cannot be one law for TDs and another for ordinary citizens”.
There isn’t. At the risk of deflating Mr Healy’s ego, TDs are “ordinary citizens”. – Yours, etc,
Sir, – Which is the greater offence: to return false figures in your VAT returns to the Revenue Commissioners, which is illegal, or to destroy the economy of the State, which is not? – Yours, etc,
