Sir, - While the Millennium Spire is a thing of beauty in itself, and would have some merit if placed in the centre of the Phoenix Park, it is ludicrous in the centre of O'Connell Street. One of the first principles of architecture is good proportion, and when one considers the width of the street and the height of adjoining buildings the enormity of the disparity becomes apparent. Imagine the Eiffel Tower in the middle of the Champs Elysees.
What does the spire represent? What does it symbolise? What does it inspire, if you will excuse the pun? Already it is the butt of advertising slogans.
I think the judges may have been influenced by the beauty of the object itself and the mediocrity of the other proposals. That is no reason for inflicting it on the citizens of Dublin for ever. - Yours, etc., P. Dunn,
Sydenham Road, Dublin.
