Sir, - The main street of our capital city is the most appropriate place for our Millennium Monument. It would be fitting that a symbol to mark the 2,000th anniversary of the birth of Christ should have spiritual significance.
I understand O'Connell Street is to be regenerated, and the civic authorities are planning to reintroduce the old-style shop fronts which would delight those of us who remember this old and beautiful street as we knew it 40 years ago. Much old stone is still visible on the buildings. It has been suggested that stone would be the most appropriate material for the new millennium monument. I wholeheartedly agree.
May I suggest that a stone pillar with the figure of a white dove at the top, lit up at night, would be really symbolic? The dove is a Christian symbol (of the Holy Spirit) and it is also a symbol of peace. Perhaps the words "Peace", "Pax" or "Shalom" could be neon-lit at the top of the stone pillar, presided over by an artistic representation of a white dove, suitably protected.
What I am suggesting would not be offensive to anyone and, properly designed, could be a very worthy and meaningful millennium monument. - Yours, etc.
