Sir, - As this century draws to a close let us stop to contemplate the wonders we have achieved technologically. The world is a smaller place now thanks to telecommunications and air travel.
There is much discussion about millennium projects. Let us forget the domes, fountains and obelisks and concentrate on the joy we would feel as we ring in the new century to know that, even for one night, no one on earth would go to bed hungry. It should not be beyond the capabilities of all of us now gifted with life to turn our focus towards our hungry brothers and sisters.
I do not say this in a naive way and am aware of some of the obstacles and complications. I do not, however, underestimate the power of being united. Let us communicate with each other across the world to set the project into operation. I would be happy if others wish to join me in getting this project off the ground. I feel we have never before lived in an age where we can make this happen.
I recall someone once saying that the flap of a butterfly's wings has ecological effects we would never have dreamed of. Let us not waste time. - Yours, etc., Margaret Riordan,
