Madam, - Chris Stephen writes that Slobodan Milosevic had just one friend and lover, Mira Markovic (The Irish Times, March 13th).
"They met in high school, became inseparable and later married, though she insisted on keeping her maiden name".
"Though"? "Insisted"? This is not the first time that I have seen a reference to Milosevic and his wife retaining different surnames as if it were somehow aberrant behaviour, rather than normal practice in marriages where both spouses are regarded as equal partners.
Milosevic was a dictator, a serial abuser of human rights and a war criminal and Markovic is not much better, but please let's not condemn them for regarding themselves as equals. - Yours, etc,
