Madam, - In his review of Baruch Kimmerling's magisterial Politicide (Books, August 9), Deaglán de Bréadún wonders whether Israeli prime minister Ariel Sharon could be described as "a second Milosevic".

Exactly half a century ago, in August 1953, Sharon perpetrated his first recorded massacre as commander of the Israeli army's infamous Unit 101, when his paratroopers slaughtered between 20 and 50 Palestinian refugees at the El-Bureig refugee camp south of Gaza.

At the time, Slobodan Milosevic was barely 12 years old. It would therefore seem more appropriate to speculate whether the former Serbian butcher was "a second Sharon". - Yours. etc.,
