Sir, - Kevin Myers (An Irishman's Diary, September 22nd) bemoans the words of an "excruciatingly awful song" which Eircom played for him when he was holding on the telephone for an operator (Ma lurv is your lurv, etc.); and he attributes to Eircom a "sublime contempt for its audience".

At the end of the same article, Mr Myers uses the name of a man I believe to be the saviour of mankind for no other reason than to pad out an exclamatory remark. In the course of my own life I have noted that such use of this name by me has been the expression of a resistance to, if not contempt for, that man; and I now object to such use.

I trust that Mr Myers has not a sublime contempt for those of his readers who think like me in regard to this name. - Yours, etc.,

Michael Ahern, Shannon Drive, Corbally, Limerick.
