Madam, – Ireland is in crisis. The world is watching. Can I suggest that we conduct our keening in Irish? Headlines that scream “We are running out of money” are rapidly picked up by the international media.

However, headlines such as “Níl aon airgead againn” or “Tá na baincéirí an-dána” would be understood by the majority of Irish readers, and might improve market sentiment.

After all, I can’t imagine “the markets” spend much time translating apocalyptic Greek, Spanish and Portuguese headlines into English. – Yours, etc,
