Minimum wage and competitiveness

Sir, – How interesting that Sean O'Sullivan (December 23rd) regards the Labour proposal for a relatively modest increase in the minimum wage as "traditional pre-election guff". His argument that it would damage competitiveness and result in job losses is remarkably similar to that posited by the Tories here in the UK during their failed general election campaign in 1997.

That the heirs to Thatcher and Major will introduce the new national living wage early next year, with an hourly rate of almost €10 at current exchange rates, demonstrates the extent to which this position has become discredited. – Yours, etc,
