Sir, – I was driving my son along the main road in Malahide (he’s home for Christmas from Canada – there for work, thanks, Anglo, etc!). We passed a car with only one working light and I mentioned two recent letters to your paper about missing headlights. Less than one minute later we passed six more vehicles: four of which had one headlight; one had no lights on one side; and one had no rear lights.
My son could not believe how people were blatantly ignoring basic safety rules. How difficult would it be for a team of two gardaí to stand at a safe area and pull in the faulty vehicles? A fine of €100 would be a handy money- making exercise for the exchequer and very easy to set up. All they need are eyes; the cars are obvious enough, and there are plenty of them.
As usual nothing will be done because there is no will to enact the law as it stands. – Yours, etc,
