Madam, - Reading Deaglán de Bréadún's comments on mobile phone distractions (An Irishman's Diary, August 21st), reminded me of a recent two-hour train journey in the UK.

Not once in the entire time was there the sound of a mobile phone. The reason for the silence was simple - I was sitting in a designated "quiet carriage" which the operating company had thoughtfully included for people like me who enjoy peace and quiet on such occasions - peace to read, work or sleep as desired.

It shouldn't be too difficult for Iarnród Éireann to follow suit; and - who knows? - it might improve passenger numbers. The only thing is, UK passengers tend to be more compliant than Irish ones. But it would be worth a try, I'm sure. - Yours, etc.,
