Madam, - It is vital that we remain conscious of the threats that mobile phones pose, as highlighted last week in the UK expert report which warned of the dangers to children in particular.

The ESB is planning to build a new 20-metre communciations structure on Vernon Avenue in Clontarf - close to a local health centre and to St Anne's Park - and intends to disguise the structure as a tree. This location is totally unsuitable given the potential danger to children and the need to build exclusion zones around base stations.

Surely it is incumbent on State-owned companies such as the ESB to try and minimise the visual and health impact of their infrastructure? It is time for the Government and the regulator to develop proper policy in this area so that we can harness mobile technology for the benefits it brings while remaining vigilant about the associated dangers. - Yours, etc.,

Cllr NAOISE Ó MUIRÍ, City Hall, Dublin 2.
