Madam, - I agree with Peter F. McIntyre (October 4th) about encouraging people to step outside pubs when they wish to use their mobile phones. But perhaps we could first encourage people to step outside libraries, churches, cinemas, theatres and museums to use their phones, before turning our attention to pubs.
After all, one expects noisy chatter in a pub, but not in places that are supposedly for quiet reflection and sanctuary. If I could have silence from mobiles while in the library, I would happily tolerate them in the pub.- Yours, etc,
