Mobile phones in cars

Sir, – While many will welcome the new laws governing mobile usage and texting while driving, there is a certain amount of confusion generated by the wording and people are wondering what is the actual position governing the usage of an installed hands-free kit.

Is it safe to assume that one is still allowed to make and receive telephone calls while driving using the technology of voice-activated dialling, and one touch auto-answering? The new law states that is not permissible to hold a mobile phone while driving. This is clear. However, there is a confusion which needs to be addressed in relation to the usage of a car kit. Most businesses rely on being able to contact their employees while out on the road, and for the self-employed a mobile phone is an essential tool for managing their working day.

Perhaps we could have a clear definition of the rules in this regard. Yours, etc,

ROBIN D HEATHER,
