Madam, - While browsing through the website of the European Central Bank looking for hints on its monetary policy, I came across a fascinating titbit of information. The founding treaties of our common currency allow each member-state to change the obverse designs of their national coins every five years.
As 2007 approaches, surely now is an appropriate time for the Government to correct the disastrous mistake made in 2001 and reintroduce some of Percy Metcalfe's wonderful coin designs?
The harp design could be maintained for the €1 and €2 coins, but surely some of the menagerie of pig, horse, hare, cock, greyhound, bull and salmon could be resurrected from the wastebin of history? - Yours etc,
AIDEN DESMOND, Mill Road, Midleton, Co Cork.
