Sir, - Up to ten years ago or less, I could go to a social gathering in the knowledge that conversation could be made with strangers or acquaintances about literature, the arts or matters of some general merit.
Now I find that most people want to bore me with talk about house prices, share prices, or how much money they have made on an investment.
It is a sad reflection on our society that so many have reduced themselves to such crass vulgarity. I can assume only it is another symptom of those who previously had not feeling the need to boast about what they now have.
Such people should realise that talking about money will never replace the quality of polite manners. - Yours, etc.,
