Sir, - William Campbell seems to be on some kind of crusade, judging by the tirade of abuse he hurls at John Howard for simply making the suggestion that the proposed Monkstown ring road be completed.

The problems we in Rowan Park face are more to do with the "here and now" than extra volumes of traffic that may materialise as a result of a new stretch of road.dealing with huge numbers of cars, trucks and busses and the Monkstown ring road is an attempt to rebalance the traffic flows. I am in favour of any proposal that will reduce the amount of traffic going by my door.

Rowan Park and Stradhrook Road are suburban residential roads that took their present shape in the 1930s, yet the residents have had to live with disproportionate volumes of traffic while other areas, whose residents use our roads, get away scot free. We are typical of many residential areas around the city who by our silence have been seen by the planners as a path of least resistance.

Well not any more, Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown councillors and planners are going to hear plenty from us from now on. Unaffected observers, like Mr Campbell, can if they like attempt to overcome the road haulage lobby, the car sales lobby and the ridiculous intransigence of Dublin Bus, but we intend to fight our own corner and clean up our own patch and the best of luck to others to do the same for themselves. - Yours, etc.,
