Sir, – Senator David Norris is to be commended for his candid remarks about “dirty Dublin” and Irish people’s tolerance for littering in public places. But the problem of litter louts and how to correct them extends beyond the capital’s streets.
Once there is any prospect of blue skies and reasonably high temperatures, the popular seaside amenity of Sandycove in south Dublin can look forward to hordes of young visitors descending on its beach and the nearby Forty Foot.
They leaving behind bottles, cans, chewing gum, sweet rappers, used tissues, cigarette butts and even various items of clothing for council workers and local residents to dispose of properly.
Sad to say, but the old maxim “every cloud has a silver lining” never rings truer than during Ireland’s summer days. – Yours, etc, MICHAEL CULLEN Sandycove, Co Dublin.
