Motorway education

Sir, – I have just returned from my Christmas holiday in the UK and one thing that struck me was a very notable difference of attitudes towards motorway driving. I drove from Holyhead down to the Isle of Wight and back on a variety of road networks. On the UK motorways, and dual carriageways, the majority of drivers drove in the left-hand lane, and only used the middle or outer lanes for overtaking before returning to inner left-hand lane. They even indicated their intention too when changing lanes. Why is it that most drivers in Ireland favour using only the middle lane of a motorway? Am I missing something here in Ireland or should the Road Safety Authority be educating Irish drivers about correct lane usage on motorways? – Yours, etc,
