Madam, - John Linehan (May 23rd) asks an important question: why build motorways, not railways? I too would like to know when Ireland will enter the 21st century and realise that we have an opportunity to plan for our environmental future.
It is time to stop this pointless exercise in road-building and look at alternatives. Motorways will destroy our countryside, our environment and our archaeological heritage without significantly rewarding us in terms of safety, ease of travel or reduced congestion. - Yours, etc,
GERALDINE BYRNE,
Dublin 2.
