Motorways and joined-up thinking

Sir, – The new M17 opened last week with great fanfare, linking the towns of Gort (population 2,644) with the town of Tuam (population 8,767).

During his tenure as minister for transport from 2011 to 2014, Leo Varadkar mothballed the long-planned and much-needed motorway between Limerick and Cork, with combined metropolitan populations of 561,629. The current Minister for Transport Shane Ross has cast doubt on whether this project will kick off by 2023.

Can Mr Varadkar and Mr Ross please show some joined-up thinking by giving the go-ahead to the linking of the second and third-largest cities in the State without further delay? – Yours, etc,

JOHN LYNCH,
