Sir, - There are many great Irish names in Mount Jerome Cemetery. Many are lavishly commemorated by the country's best collection of funerary monuments: tombs in the form of temples, statues, sarcophagi, putti, urns, carved panels in stone and marble. These are now being plundered. A few weeks ago I noticed a man making off with a stone figure under his coat. When I mentioned this to a stone worker there, he said it was common knowledge that "the stuff is walking out of Mount Jerome".
Before the loss is total could the cemetery be declared - to coin the obvious phrase - a national monument ? - Yours, etc.,
Adrian Kenny, Kingsland Parade, Portobello, Dublin 8.
