Sir, – I read with trepidation of plans to remove Dublin city centre statues of temperance agitator Fr Matthew, lyricist Thomas Moore and Ms Molly Malone, fishwife (Olivia Kelly, Home News, August 22nd). On the other hand, providence has mysteriously spared the high-gloss plaster statue of Jesus in a perspex box on Upper O’Connell Street. I bid an indifferent farewell to the mute Steine stone at the south end of D’Olier Street. Perhaps these moving statues present an opportunity to reinstate the weird Crampton Memorial, or at least to replace Fr Matthew’s long-absent fingers. – Yours, etc,
DAVID McMAHON,
Thomas Davis Street South,
Dublin 8.
