Sir, – Brian Cowen states that no one regrets our present situation more than he does (Front page, August 30th).
Could I respectfully suggest there are hundreds of thousands of people whose regret is far greater, as they struggle to make ends meet, while Mr Cowen lives on his generous pension.
When our political masters decide to halve their salaries, pensions and expenses – then we might believe that they empathise with those who have been placed on the margins by austerity. As an aside: if they did so, they might even be re-elected by winning our respect, providing we have not died of shock! – Yours, etc,
