Sir, - I, for one, fully accept Mrs Mary Robinson's explanation of the events which led to Conor O'Clery not accompanying her party to Tibet. I felt it was very ungracious of you to imply that the High Commissioner, of all people, would seek to exclude him. Your headline on the day in question was particularly unfortunate.
What possible motive could she have had? I suspect the Chinese could barely suppress their glee at your criticism of her at a time when she needed all the support she could get. And as for the piece by Kevin Myers (An Irishman's Diary, September 11th)! Every time I read him, which is very seldom, I am amazed at his infantile style and at how low he can sink. - Yours, etc., Brian Gallagher,
Pinehaven, Co Dublin.
