Sir, - It is good to read that Ireland is to become "a key global centre in advanced communications" (The Irish Times, November 19th). The enthusiasm of the Taoiseach, the Tanaiste and Mrs O'Rourke, as displayed by your photograph featuring the former improbably working a computer, contrasts starkly with their lack of enthusiasm in providing a multi-channel television service to those outside the large centres of population.

Those who hold the MMDS monopoly have failed to broadcast their signals to the many areas outside the line of sight of their transmitters. Digital services are now available to every home in Britain with 150 channels and far superior pictures. The digital signal from satellite is technically as available here as in Britain. Far from leading, we are not even following our European neighbours. What is our timetable? The silence is deafening. - Yours, etc., James Young,

Glassely, Ballitore, Co Kildare.
