MURDER OF STUDENT

JOHN F. FALLON,

JOHN F. FALLON,

Sir, - I wish to be associated with the sentiments so ably expressed by David Judge of the Irish-Chinese Cultural Society (February 2nd), and others, on the fatal assault on Zhao Liu Tao.

As one who has had close contacts recently with young Chinese students in their own country and who has warm memories of China, I feel especially saddened and outraged at this barbaric deed on a Dublin street - intensified as I recall how often I walked down crowded Chinese streets feeling unthreatened and treated with the courtesy and respect characteristic of the Chinese people.

We have a long road to travel to fully understand the meaning of racial harmony and indeed human rights and the right to life - about which we preach so eloquently. But then the discrepancy between Christian teaching on loving your neighbour and its practice is well known.
