Madam, - I believe Kevin Myers is mistaken in suggesting that the name "Kelly" derives from "ceallagh" meaning "strife" (An Irishman's Diary, October 26th) . It more likely comes from "ceallach", a person who lives in a (monastic) cell ("cill"). As a name, therefore, Kelly has no more to do with conflict than, say, Ardoyne.

Having established that Murphy = sea-warrior = pirate, the inclusion of a picture of Nelson seems like an insult to the greatest sea-warrior of them all. But it does remind us that the King of Naples rewarded Nelson with the title Duke of Bronté for intervening in piratical fashion against the Neapolitan people. - Yours, etc,
