Sir, – I fully support Fiach Mac Conghail (July 15th). It would be a travesty to beat all travesties (and there have been many) if the new Liffey bridge is not named the “Abbey Bridge”. Whereas I am sure the final five nominees deserve credit for what they have achieved in their respective fields, surely our national theatre, The Abbey, which is so revered around the globe and which has contributed so much to our history, not to mention tourism, deserves this accolade. – Yours, etc,

Sir, – I am a member of the bridge naming committee which Fiach Mac Conghaill referred to in his letter.
I have consistently voted in favour of naming the bridge after the Abbey Theatre. Having attended all the meetings, I was unfortunately unable to attend the last committee meeting. I was desperately disappointed the Abbey was not included on the final list.
I hope we can reconvene this group to make a more representative decision because a number of members were not in attendance.
Otherwise it’s my intention, along with other council colleagues, that we co-sign a motion to include the Abbey Theatre for consideration at the full council meeting.
While all of the names submitted are worthy, I do believe that the “Abbey Theatre Bridge” is the most appropriate name.– Yours, etc,
