KEVIN DUFF,
Madam, - It baffles me that, four years after it was chosen to be the monument for Dublin and as it finally begins to go up, the public continue to deride and reject the Spire. On this page, a former city architect recently called it a "lamp-post"; and recently we had "The Pointless Point" (yawn). Are any of these critics prepared for the possibility of being wrong about the spire?
Examples from around Europe show that a needle-type obelisk on an axial urban vista - there will be four axial vistas to the spire - makes for good cityscape. I imagine that the long views of the Spire from Capel Street and Connolly Station will be excellent (despite the railway bridge on Talbot Street). - Yours, etc.,

Madam, - I suggest the Garda place surveillance cameras on the Spike to improve security in the O'Connell Street area. Then we could call it the "Spyer"! - Yours, etc.,
