Sir, - Your Editorial of June 10th on the national drugs strategy correctly points out the many successes of the Government's approach to problem drug use.Involving local communities and giving them a real say in how the problem is tackled has greatly benefited areas hardest hit by drugs.
With the advent of the local drugs task forces, communities are now responding effectively to the myriad of issues that lead to problem drug use. However, recent tragedies remind us that there is still a great deal of work to be done. Years of social neglect will not be overcome in a short space of time.
As you stated, "This is a social, legal, medical, and educational project that is more worthy of investment than anything else affecting the economy or the social fabric of the nation." Having been closely involved in the implementation of the national drug strategy, we urge the Government to continue to provide local communities with the resources and capital costs to sustain the fight against drug misuse. - Yours, etc.,
