Madam, - Aidan Dunne (Arts, July 15th) accurately identifies the limitations of the exhibition spaces of the Millennium Wing of the National Gallery.

However, there is another aspect of the Gallery's provision which merits comment. I refer to the library - surely an important component of the educational resource of such a national institution.

Once one has successfully gained access to it one begins to wonder whether it was worth the trouble given the pitifully small stock available.

Contrast this, for example, with the library facilities available in the newly extended and redesigned Van Abbe museum in the provincial Dutch city of Eindhoven. These extend over three floors of the museum, are prominently positioned, easily accessible from the entrance and freely available to all.

It does seem a pity that some of the "great space" in the Millennium Wing was not used to better effect in this regard. - Yours, etc.,
